Getting Married in Cyprus
Legal Requirements & Documentation

Marriages performed in Cyprus are internationally recognised and legally binding. Although getting married in Cyprus is not that difficult, do make it your priority to fully understand the legal requirements.

Civil ceremonies can take place in a Town Hall or at authorised venues which have a licence to hold a wedding ceremony.

With a ‘Special Licence’ you will need to be resident in Cyprus for 3 clear working days prior to your wedding day. In the absence of the ‘Special Licence’, you will need to be in resident a Cyprus for 15 days post submission of a Notice of Marriage. Your marriage application must be made in person to the Marriage Officer at the Municipality of your choice after you arrive in Cyprus.

For a Catholic ceremony to be legally binding it must be preceded by a civil ceremony.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:

Please carry all the original documents as well as certified copies translated in English with you to Cyprus. The following documentation for both the bride and groom is required to be presented when applying for a marriage licence in Cyprus.

1. Passport with minimum validity of six months. Photocopies of the same,
2. Photocopies of the passports for your two witnesses, listing their name, address and occupation,
3. Birth Certificate (showing mother and fathers names),
4. If you are divorced – Decree Absolute and previous Marriage Certificate,
5. If you are a widower – Death Certificate of previous spouse and previous Marriage Certificate, and
6. A Certificate of No Impediment / Certificate of Freedom to Marry bearing the stamp.

For a religious ceremony, please follow the above procedure and additionally, you will also need to contact the Registered Minister of the Church where you plan to get married to make the extra arrangements required for a religious ceremony.

According to Cypriot Law, the Marriage Officer will forward a certified copy of your Certificate of Marriage to the Embassy or the Consulate of your home country (if they are located in Cyprus).

Cypriot Weddings
Customs & Traditions

One of the many unique traditions in a real Cyprus style wedding is one where after the bride is dressed up, her parents, chief attendant and close friends gather around her and wrap a red scarf around her waist in order to symbolize her virginity. Similarly, a red scarf is wrapped around the groom to mark his fertility.
Another distinctive tradition is where the unmarried friends of the bride write their names on the bottom of the bride’s shoes. At the end of the evening, when the bride takes off her shoes, only one name will remain written on the sole. That will be the next woman to marry!

Wedding Locations in Cyprus

WEDDINGS IN AYIA NAPA

Ayia Napa is a Mediterranean resort town on the southeast coast of Cyprus, known for its beaches. The town's main landmark is the storied, Venetian-era Ayia Napa Monastery.

Ayia Napa is the perfect wedding destination – a vibrant town that has many beautiful venues like the Nissi Beach, the Aphrodite beach, the Ammos (Kampouri) beach, Cape Greco with its breath-taking sunsets, Arotas (Juniper Tree) which is the most photographed tree in Ayia Napa, Thalassa Museum for couples who want sophistication and elegance, Poseidon Palace – a traditional place by the fishing shelter or a more indoor venue of Ayia Napa Town Hall and the Amphitheatre of the Town Hall.

WEDDINGS IN PAPHOS

Looking for a grand spot to profess your lifelong love? Then it has got to be at the Paphos Medieval Castle. Oozing with the kind of appeal that is sure to make your wedding simply unbelievable. Get a backdrop of the picturesque harbour and the brilliant blue sea and watch the sky turn magical as the sun sets over the area.

Or, maybe you’d like a completely alternative type of venue for your ceremony and reception, like an amazing yacht wedding ceremony! Why not hire your very own private yacht where your wedding ceremony will take place on board among the privacy of your family and friends! Moored in the port of Paphos Harbour lies a selection of yachts available for your special day.

WEDDINGS IN LARNACA

If you fancy a folkloric twist on your wedding day, then the folklore museum or the Larnaca Castle in Larnaca can be transformed into an ideal spot, with nice outdoor areas that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Venues in Larnaca aren’t really about the wow factor but more about simplicity, for e.g., St. Helena Church – a pretty whitewashed church with pretty stained glass windows or the Nikolaidion Mansion – a recently restored 19th century aristocratic house.

Larnaca offers many such quaint venues that offer couples a charming affair. While at the ceremony, your guests will have the chance to take in all the tradition, and if you or your guests are in the mood for theatrics, an outdoor setting can be easily converted into a performance platform.

WEDDINGS IN NICOSIA

Nicosia also known as Lefkosia, is the capital city of Cyprus and has a rich history of 1,000 years. Weddings in Lefkosia are particularly popular because of the beautiful venues offered but also because of convenience in terms of getting the paper work done.

The sandstone Famagusta Gate is an awesome urban setting steeped in history. After its restoration in 1981, Famagusta Gate has become a real hot spot for civil weddings with two gorgeous large halls.

Sightseeing in Cyprus

APHRODITE’S ROCK

Paphos is considered to be the birthplace of Aphrodite – the goddess of love. Thus it’s almost a mandatory to visit the famous Aphrodite’s Rock located off the shore along the main road from Paphos to Limassol. This place makes for some really great photo-shoots!

Paphos is split into two main parts – the Kato Paphos where you can visit archaeological landmarks of House of Dionysus and the House of Theseus, the 16th century Paphos Fort built by the Turkish, the Tombs of the Kings or the Odeon, a classic Greek amphitheatre where plays and other live performances are still offered.

NISSI BEACH – AYIA NAPA

Nissi Beach, Grecian Bay and Makronissos Beach are a must visit when you’re in Ayia Napa. Experience live music, great drinks and a vibrant, youthful atmosphere. Out of these the Nissi Beach is especially splendid – 500 metres stretch of clear white sand and water.

Nissi Beach has become a popular destination for clubbers with the Nissi Bay Beach Bar being a top favourite with locals and tourists alike, playing music throughout the day and organizing events like foam parties and catwalks with guest DJs. You can also enjoy a day of water sports and beach volleyball here.

LIMASSOL

After the capital of Nicosia, Limassol is the largest urban destination on the island of Cyprus. It is a major sea port, and has become a major tourism destination for those in search of sun and sand.

The Old Town of Limassol is the best place to start your sightseeing as you venture towards the impressive Limassol Castle and then on to the Anexartisias Street – a major shopping venue, and Saripolou Square – which serves as a nightlife hub for locals and visitors alike.

You must not miss a walk along the Limassol Marina where you can see luxury yachts docked along the beachfront on the Akti Olympion path.

PROTARAS

For maximum relaxation and accessible beaches, it is hard to beat the coastal resort of Protaras. The main beach, Fig Tree Bay, is dotted with sun beds and loungers, and you can choose whether to take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Mediterranean or just sip a cocktail in the sunshine.

The nearby Cape Greco is a protected national park with a quieter, family-friendly atmosphere. If you’re feeling up to it then go on the 10-mile hike and soak in the views of the ocean and the town, and the nightlife in Protaras offers plenty of fun until the early hours of the morning.

So now that you’re updated with all the dope you need on having a fabulous destination wedding in Cyprus, what you need to do is get a checklist ready. Identify a location from those above or even another one that you might have heard of.

Get your marriage documentation in place, make your guest list, getting your wardrobe ready to match the beauty of Cyprus, and then, leave the planning to a professional wedding planner.

That way, you can spend most of your pre-wedding time dreaming, anticipating and pampering yourself with shopping trips, spa treatments and giving time to all your excited relatives.
