Maltese Weddings
Customs & Traditions

IL-GILWA
Traditional Maltese weddings featured the bridal party walking in procession beneath an ornate canopy, from the home of the bride's family to the parish church, with singers trailing behind serenading the bride and groom. The Maltese word for this custom is il-ġilwa.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW
“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”. Many brides love to use this in their wedding rhyme. The bride wears four objects on her wedding day for good luck charms. Something old stands for continuity and something new gives you optimism as the future. Something borrowed represents happiness and something blue symbolizes purity, love and fidelity.
